Summary

If you have been looking for a new fantasy book to read, you may have heard of Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing in recent times, which has become increasingly popular in the fantasy realm. This book is set to be the first book of a five book series The Empyrean. When I first it picked up at my local store, I didn’t have many expectations - only that the blurb seemed interesting and that I had heard about it being bantered about.

The Good

After reading the first chapter, I knew it would not disappoint. A solid hook in the beginning and the introduction of vibrant characters ensured that I did not put this book down for the rest of the day. I found that it was very easy to get attached to not only the heroine, but several characters in the book, including the dragons.

This novel is packed with action and adventure. Violet may not be the strongest or the most skilled in her year, but she is loyal and tenacious. In a school bent on weeding out the weak, she must prove not only to herself, but everyone around her why she deserves to be part of their squad. In almost every page, there is something happening to our heroine, whether she is running around trying to save herself, or trying to save someone else, there’s never a dull moment! You see her growth throughout the story, and her relationships with the people around her, including the not-so-friendly teammates. Be assured however, if you are someone who can’t go through a fantasy book without some swooning romance, there is plenty of that in the book!

The Not-So-Good

On the downside, if you are into intricate plot lines, or novels with complex and web-like relationships between characters - such as the Song of Ice and Fire series, you will be disappointed. The story line for this book is fairly straight forward and the overall direction of the story predictable. For someone who has been a reader of this genre for a little while, you may find that many events in this book will not be a surprise, but if you enjoy the writing style and a would like a fun little book during your time off, this is definitely a must-read!

My rating: 4/5
